Stephen is an American songwriter, drummer, and record producer from Detroit, Michigan. Bray is best known for his ten-year collaboration with Madonna.  Bray began studying music through private instruction in Detroit, and continued his education in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Washtenaw College and at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Bray met Madonna when she attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for dance.  Madonna continued her dance study in New York and began writing songs after performing with an early incarnation of the Breakfast Club band.

Bray relocated to New York just as Madonna was launching her solo career in 1980.  By 1981 they were writing songs together.  When Madonna obtained her recording contract with Sire Records, she continued collaborating with Bray.
Bray co-wrote and/or produced many of Madonna's top ten recordings including Into The Groove, Papa Don’t Preach, True Blue and Express Yourself.

Performing and writing with Breakfast Club he earned a Grammy nomination in 1987 for best new artist and a top ten single, Right On Track.  He also composed and produced songs for other artists including Gladys Knight, The Jets, and Kylie Minogue, as well as for film projects like Beverly Hills Cop II and Who’s That Girl?,  for which he also composed the score.  With co-writers Brenda Russell and Allee Willis, Stephen was nominated for a Tony Award in 2006 for best original score for the successful Broadway musical The Color Purple.

Stephen owns and operates Saturn Sound recording studios and the Soultone Records record label. He is married to movie producer Stephanie Allain, who produced Hustle & Flow, Something New and Black Snake Moan.

Stephen attended and then hosted many of Cat Cohen’s music theory and song structure workshops.  Cat coached Bray in private sessions for a few years in chord theory and keyboards.
